about

Uncured is essentially a purging of a year’s worth of song-nuggets that were lost before being fully completed. When my hard drive failed in early January 2012 I was basically faced with two options; 1) spend a bunch of cash to try and save this work, or 2) part ways and move on. Given the economics of the situation, I chose the latter of the two. That choice behind me, it seemed that there was still a decent volume of material that had been saved thanks to SoundCloud and my habit of saving drafts of pieces as I worked. So, here I present for your consumption the raw, “Uncured” material. I hope that those who listen enjoy it for what it is and understand the potential and multiplicity of choices that I look at with each step of the composition process. I’m typically a heavy revisionist and my works will generally go through a number of phases and iterations, most of these are the original pass of beat-smithing or mixing/sampling and arranging something I found within the period of one evening. Given the time constraints I typically manage to work on music a night or two a week, potentially more as work and family permit, but with those intermittent windows the focus is typically on the creation in a first pass and ultimately revisions as I feel like a cohesive release is taking shape. Obviously that never happened here.

There are two main themes present on this release, first being steeped in jazz and avant-garde, the other being a more electronic/hip-hop type vibe. The mix of these two seemed to flow best by allowing some chaotic attraction to occur amidst digital manipulation.
That said, the return to a jazz aesthetic with the first piece of this project was very gratifying for me as this thread has been with me since the beginning of my career studying and producing music. On that front, I consider this effort homage to influences like Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman and on the electro-classical-avant tip composers like Edgar Varese and Milton Babbitt. Special thanks to Seth Warren-Crow who’s drumming appears throughout the mix.

The electronic side of this stems from some of the previous work I’ve done with the group Antler Antennas, and is driven by my love of the old school electronic and hiphop work based on 808s and analog synths. On this front its about simplicity, finding new grooves and exploring new, or maybe less conventional approaches to how the elements work with each other.
